How is coaching different from counseling or therapy?
Though there are potential overlaps, coaching differs from therapy primarily in that it focuses on specific outcomes and measurable results. Structure and accountability are an integral part of the coaching process, and sessions typically begin with a specific goal and end with a clear assignment. Traditional therapy and counseling primarily focus on diagnosing and treating psychological disorders or emotional difficulties. The goal of therapy is typically emotional wellbeing and healthier function, whereas the goal of life coaching is achieving a specific outcome. For those reasons, you will find that most life coaching is not intended to be done over a long period of time but rather through time-bound contracts (usually between 3-12 months to allow for a core transformation).
